Hillary attacks Bush Crony Contracts in WSJ

It looks like Hillary has decided on her new role in the Democratic Party, that of Leftwing pamphleteer.  The Wall Street Journal today has published an article by Hillary putting a spotlight on the corrupt and venal spread of private contractors such as Blackwater and Halliburton for projects and jobs that were once handled by government institutions.

Excerpt below the fold from the WSJ article entitled,No Crisis Is Immune From Exploitation Under Bush

<Tucked away on the Cayman Islands sits Ugland House, an unassuming, nondescript building of modest scale and size. However, according to a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), this five-story office building is home to more than 18,000 corporate entities, nearly half of which have U.S. ties.</p>

In the past few years, the number of corporations flocking to places like the Cayman Islands to evade U.S. taxes has exploded. One of these companies, former Halliburton subsidiary KBR, has used offshore tax havens to avoid paying hundreds of millions of dollars in federal taxes. To no one's surprise, instead of cracking down on KBR, the Bush administration has rewarded the company in April of this year with a 10-year, $150 billion contract in Iraq.

There appears to be no crisis, tragedy or disaster immune from exploitation under the Bush administration. The examples of the waste, fraud and abuse are legion -- from KBR performing shoddy electrical work in Iraq that has resulted in the electrocution of our military personnel according to Pentagon and Congressional investigators, to the firing of an Army official who dared to refuse a $1 billion payout for questionable charges to the same company. In another scam, the Pentagon awarded a $300 million contract to AEY, Inc., a company run by a 22-year-old who fulfilled an ammunition deal in Afghanistan by supplying rotting Chinese-made munitions to our allies.>

She goes on to describe how the Bush crony contractors have taken over emergency response services such as FEMA, and that these contracts are sprinkled all over the government programs now, with no bid contracts and documented fraud rampant according to a GAO report.

She then calls for reform of the government contract services, with bullet points outlining steps she think will begin to reign in these out of control contractors.

Earlier, Hillary wrote another article alerting the public to the Bush White House initiative to classify certain birth contraceptive practices as abortion, therefore eliminating government and insurance payment for these practices.  She called for public opposition to the Bush plan.

I'm sure many might see these moves by Clinton in a sinister light, as continuing her campaign against Obama in a stealth manner.  She may be seen as shaming Obama by coming out as a bullhorn for the Left just he tries to pivot to the center to win the general election.

But maybe since she lost, this has freed her from her need to pander to the masses, so that she can now fight for what she believes in without constant political maneuver.  Perhaps Obama would be doing the very same thing if she had won.

Whatever is behind it, I believe that this is a great move for her at this time.  When has it been that some one who has won so many votes in an election, has come out forthrightly and clearly as a voice for the Left?  I hope more politicians and citizens will join with her in creating a Liberal headwind for the country.

With this wind at his back, Obama may be able to guide our ship of state from these treacherous waters to the Promised Land.

This has been one of the major points of the Bush (none / 0)

presidency..

I am surprised that it has not been looked at more aggressively.

Escape character = \ (none / 0)

to make the < show up you have to "escape" it.

to type the above post I had to write:

Use \<blockquote\>this is a quote\</blockquote\>

To write the above I had to escape the escape characters:

\\

To write above I had to use three escape characters... ;~)

careful of that recursion chris, you could bump into your own backside that way.

of course in Amsterdam you have to pay extra for that...

Nah, she wouldn't listen to me.

I am one of those kool-aid drinking Obamanaughts..

One of the millions that would like to see her as VP as a matter of fact.

Funny how that worked out....

sorry, your suggested censorship of very likely the best Democratic voice and political mind around today, as the price for HRC being on a ticket to help Obama fight the wingers is just plain misplaced. i say, take it or leave it - but don't subtly smear the ex-Prez.

No, this is exactly what she should be doing. This is the type of piece that helps remind people that McCain won't change the status quo as far has Haliburton/KBR and off shore corp tax dodges etc goes.

Now as to writing in the WSJ I find that a bit curious, nothing sinister, but talk about preaching in the wrong church ;)

Nah, it's the right paper, it's read by the business community right and left, and, it's good to have a left view point in there.

Good for her, she is out there fighting in the biz community, something a lot of her compatriots shy away from.

She's preaching to the RIGHT church (2.00 / 2)

No need to preach to our choir here in lefty-land. The people who need to be reached with this kind of message live over there to the right in WSJ and Faux-land.

Good for her!

Hillary and Harry Truman (2.00 / 2)

She likens this to Truman taking on War Profiteers while FDR was still president. Then she says

Of course, we need far more than a Truman Committee. We need the Truman spirit in the White House, where the buck finally stops.

Slate magazine said Hillary's Myers-Briggs personality profile is exact match to Truman's:

According to Please Understand Me II (all the quotes are from the books), about half of our presidents, from George Washington to George H.W. Bush, have been Guardians, with Harry Truman being an ESTJ like Hillary (she loves to quote Truman's "The buck stops here.").

Re: Hillary attacks Bush Crony Contracts in WSJ (none / 0)

Ouch.

Does that mean Bill is Maggie Truman?

Too weird to consider.

Re: Hillary attacks Bush Crony Contracts in WSJ (2.00 / 1)

In typical Clintonian fashion, policy-wonk Hillary dives right into the specifics:

I've proposed a comprehensive overhaul to root out corruption in no-bid contracts and other shady deals. Reforms must include the following:

- Instead of rewarding companies that exploit tax shelters and incorporate in tax havens, let's ban the federal government from contracting with companies that hide profits offshore.

- We should put in place safeguards so that contracts are awarded to responsible companies that abide by the law and complete the work they're hired to do.

- Let's put a stop to the disgraceful practice of giving bonuses to contractors for work never performed, which has been allowed to happen in Iraq and throughout the federal government according to the GAO and inspectors general.

- We need to increase transparency and competition in the contracting system, and to stop the ideological privatization of critical governmental functions.

Give 'em hell, Hillary!

You're probably right (none / 0)

it was a reflex defensive measure on my part since I've been called a troll.

I'm glad the response has been positive and I think this is a good sign for the progressive movement in our country

Re: Hillary attacks Bush Crony Contracts in WSJ (2.00 / 1)

this is normal Senator Clinton, nothing new or sinister. She's always been ahead of the curve. What we should wonder if why not all Senators are writing op eds, and alerting the public to new Bush nastiness.  She should be followed, she'd like that, we sure can't count on MSM to alert us. someone must.  Or better, someone does.

Hillary rocks! I just think both she and Obama are both amazing in their own way. I totally get why they each have such loyal supporters and stuff like this proves to me why I supported her in the first place. I hope we see more of this from her.
